We all know to brush twice a day for two minutes each time and floss daily. For some individuals, this doesn’t seem like enough, or their mouth health needs a little extra support. In these cases, mouthwash may be a good addition for an improved hygiene routine. Here are some things to consider as you add mouthwash to your day.

DO: Choose therapeutic mouthwash for an effective clean. There are two primary types of mouthwash: therapeutic and cosmetic. Cosmetic mouthwash is designed to mask stinky breath for a little while, but does not actually kill the bacteria that cause the bad breath in the first place. Instead, choose a therapeutic mouthwash, which is one designed to kill bacteria. Therapeutic mouthwashes can also be made to accomplish other tasks, such as adding fluoride, loosening plaque before brushing, and whitening teeth.

DO: Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the package. The ADA Seal of Acceptance is found on the packaging of many oral health products. To earn the seal, the products have been thoroughly tested for both effectiveness and safety; the Seal cannot be bought. By looking for the Seal of Acceptance, you guarantee that you are getting a quality product that does what it says it does without injuring teeth, gums or other tissues.

DON’T: Substitute mouthwash for brushing and flossing. You still need to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Brushing, flossing and mouthwash all do unique things in your mouth health cycle that the others can’t accomplish as well. Therefore, all three should be used in conjunction with each other for the best possible clean.

DON’T: Give mouthwash to people who could swallow it. Do not give mouthwash to children under 6 years old, and use great care when giving to any other children. Be wary of high alcohol content in mouthwash; if you need to avoid alcohol for any reason, talk with your dentist.
